Classify’s provided HS code allows you to supply your own HS code to guide the classification process when requesting an HS code, rather than relying solely on the product’s name and details. This serves a variety of use cases, from HS code validation to mapping an HS code from one country to another. In this doc, we’ll review the provided HS code’s use cases.

When you supply a providedHsCode in your classification request, Classify will return a providedHsCodeStatus field that will tell you whether your providedHsCode is valid or invalid. If the providedHsCode is invalid, meaning it's not found in any WCO version, Classify will ignore the providedHsCode and base the classification on the product details instead.

Universal classifications (6-digit): 

• If the request includes a valid 6-digit providedHsCode and no ship-to country, Classify will return a 6-digit HS code and its description, forcing the HS code to match the 1-6 digits provided.
• If the request includes a valid 1-5 digit providedHsCode and no ship-to country, Classify will return a 6-digit HS code and its description, beginning with 1-5 digits provided.

Country-specific classifications (8+ digit): 

• If the request includes a valid tariff-level providedHsCode and a ship-to country, Classify will validate the HTS code and return your provided code with a valid status.
• If the request includes both a valid 1-6 digit providedHsCode and a ship-to country, Classify will return an HTS code that starts with the 1-6 digits provided along with Classify’s country-specific tariff digits.
• If the providedHsCode is valid in a previous version of the WCO HS system, but not the version currently used by the ship-to country, Classify will map the code to the correct version and provide a valid tariff code.
• If the tariff code itself is not found, but the first 6 digits of the code are valid, Classify will propagate the first 6 digits of the HS code to a valid tariff code.
• If the first 6 digits of the providedHsCode are found in a WCO HS version but is not the version used by the ship-to country, Classify will map the code to the correct version and provide a valid HTS code.
