Using input fields for accurate HS code classifications

Learn how to effectively fill out Classify input fields for maximum classification accuracy.

What is an input field?

Input fields are organizational units used for passing different types of information about your products to Classify. Classify can be used in three ways, all of which use input fields to receive product data:

Classifying your products is a simple, quick, and automated process. While only a description or an image URL is required for an HS classification, the more info you provide the more accurate your classification will be. For the most accurate classifications, it is crucial that product information is formatted and input correctly, providing as much product detail as possible.

This doc will explain each input field that Classify will accept to help ensure the correct info is added to increase accuracy.

Decoding Classify input fields

Before learning about the fields used by Classify it’s important to note the following:

  • Though Classify only requires a description, we recommend adding as many fields as possible. The more information provided, the more accurate your classifications will be; all fields left blank will be ignored.
  • If using bulk Classify, we advise adding a unique identifier (ID or SKU) so that you can easily identify and consume the HS codes once classified.

Classify input field definitions

The following list defines each Classify input field:

  1. ID (optional) - Your product ID or any number that can be used to uniquely identify each product. If a product ID number is not provided, Classify will assign ID numbers starting at 1
  2. SKU (optional) - Unique string of letters and numbers provided by you
  3. Description (required) - The name of the product
  4. Detailed description (optional) - An in-depth, long-form description of the product
  5. Image URL (optional) - Link to an image of the product. Note: Make sure you use a link to the actual image URL and not the product page URL
  6. Item URL (optional) - Link to the product page URL
  7. Category (optional) - General product category, e.g. Clothing & Accessories, Pet Supplies, Office Products
  8. Subcategory (optional) - A subdivision of the main category, e.g. Baby Clothes, Pet Beds, Adhesives & Tape
  9. Material (optional) - What the product is made from, e.g. plastic, wood, steel
  10. Brand (optional) - The brand of the product, e.g. Nike, Microsoft
  11. Color (optional) - The primary color of the product
  12. Country of Origin (optional) - The two-letter abbreviation (ISO code) for the country of manufacture or production of the product
  13. Provided HS Code (optional) - As many known digits of the HS code, e.g. if you are classifying toys, input “95” to force the logic to find codes within chapter 95, which is the chapter for toys and games. If you’re mapping pre-classified items to a new country, input the 6-digit code and it will map your HS code to your selected destination country(ies) as long as the code is valid
  14. Language code (optional) - Identifies what language you would like your HS code descriptions returned. When inputting the language code into the field, it is necessary to use the assigned two-letter code instead of the written name for the language, e.g. en, not English, and es, not Spanish
  15. Destination country (optional) - Identifies which country the product will be classified to. The destination country must be displayed with each country’s two-letter abbreviation (ISO code) and not the actual country name, e.g. AU, not Australia. Including this field will power Classify to return an 8+ digit country-specific HS code instead of the universal 6-digit code. Learn more about the differences between universal and country-specific HS codes.

If you’re uploading your bulk request CSV in Dashboard, the destination country will not be part of the template rather you will select your destination country(ies) after you upload your bulk request CSV.
